I came to a realisation today. (Unfortunately.)
I like food. I like cooking. You’d actually be hard pressed to find foodstuff I’m not a fan of (maybe just olives… which I don’t dislike, just never buy myself. Oh, and any kind of celery, hate it with a passion.)
But other than that… I’m good.
Now, like most people I have favourite foods: chocolate, ice cream, chocolate ice cream, pizza, cheesecake, apples, melons, oatmeal (yup, really), pretty much all nuts and trail mixes, popcorn, hot chocolate, black liquorice, tuna in tomato sauce, sushi makis…
This is just from the top of my head. But even if I love this stuff, I’m perfectly capable of not overindulging. I can have things I love in my fridge or in my kitchen cupboards, and when I want it, I’ll have/make some.
Today, I came to the realisation that I need to add another food into my list of foods I cannot buy in more than portion amounts. 😦
There are certain things that make any resemblance of willpower fly out the window and get consumed within 24h of coming home with me.
I don’t mean all at once, but they make me stop by the kitchen all the time and nibble a bit, until – poof! – suddenly there’s nothing left.
For example.
Almonds. (Or cashews.) I cannot buy a larger bag than what I’m willing to eat in a day. If there’s an open bag of almonds in my kitchen or in my purse it’s a goner. I’ll just help myself to a few almonds every once in a while and by the time I think “Hey, I could slice some into my porridge the next morning!” there’ll be nothing left.
The exception: I can buy a large bag and keep it at work. There I just don’t have the opportunity to nibble all the time and it gets consumed in a reasonable time frame.
Peanut butter. I buy this pretty much exclusively with the idea of stirring into my morning porridge. Doesn’t work like that. I might even last a couple of days just adding a spoonful to my oats, but by the time the jar is 3/4 full… I find myself with a big old spoon and the jar in my hand. Once or twice a year I revisit the idea of having peanut butter at home and eating it in a controlled manner, but so far I’ve been defeated at the challenge.
So. I just buy it every six months or so. Can’t be too horrid to eat almost a whole jar that rarely.
And today…
Aged cheese. Specifically – aged Gouda. If it’s older than 18 months… it won’t last 18 hours in my fridge. If it’s older than three years, all bets are off – the wedge should feel lucky if it makes it past the first hour.
The solution? From now on I’ll just buy the teensiest wedge I’m gonna need for a specific recipe. Or when I really want some cheese with my glass of white.
(I’d add strawberries as well, but I’m gonna leave them off the black list, as they spoil within 24h as is.)
So, these are my three weak spots. What are yours? (If you have any, that is. ;))

In other news, I’ve discovered a part of what’s been making my knees worse – I push my knees way too much backwards and lock them into this stiff position when standing, walking and running. I actually got called on it today in my gym class!
I didn’t even mention to the trainer I was having knee problems before my FunctionalBody class (which I really liked) but she came up to me several times during the class to correct my knee position. Even when I was just standing. 😮 Apparently I need to loosen up and not hold my legs so super straight when standing on taking a step. She said she could practically hear the click when my knees lock into the standing straight position.
Huh. I’d never considered that before. But after the class she even recommended some stuff to loosen up my knee. 🙂 And she totally recommended the stationary bike for main cardio work as well atm.
So. Even despite the cheese binge… A good day. And not much to whine about. 😉
K.
I am obsessed with fried fruit, especially dried mango! I am not big on sweets (choc. ice cream etc) so dried fruit hits the spot 🙂
Uhhh, I HEAR YOU. Cashews are the worst for me! I love them, LOVE them. It’s so hard to keep portions in control, but luckily I have learned to only have a small handful and call it day. Oh, and don’t even get me started on trailmix that is salted with smarties in it… brutal. I actually can’t by this stuff because I will not stop eating it!
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that your knees are still being troublesome. I’m wondering, though, how do you lock your knees while running? I’m a forefoot runner (mid-foot when I’m tired :)) and I don’t think I could, without much effort, straighten my legs while running. The knees are always bent. Hey, at least now that you know what is causing the injury, you can avoid it in the future. I still have some weird aches that flare up every now and again and I don’t know exactly what is causing them.
I don’t think that’s what’s caused the injury unfortunately (probably it was overuse) but I think that’s what’s been holding back the healing process. I don’t lock my knees when I run either, but I do do that when I walk. And I’ve been walking an obscene amount lately. 😉
